Hi Lakitha, thanks for engaging with me. I understand your skepticism given ideas you’ve encountered elsewhere and agree with you that there is no “white” culture. Yet with regard to your primary charge, I think you've got the wrong guy. I wonder if you read my essay before making your comment. If you did, you would notice that not only do I honor and appreciate Black American culture, but I think that deracializing people would help many so-called white people have more honor and appreciation for Black American culture. In fact, Black American culture has had such a positive and enormous influence on American culture, that if I were to erase it, I would be erasing part of myself. That is not something I am willing to do. Racialized identity — no thank you. Beautiful culture — yes, please.
